R3Access - Remote Resource Restricted Access

R3Access is a combination software and services that enable e-resource subscriptions to users from their homes. The system authorizes and authenticates the users before they can access the e-resources.

Features of R3Access v 2009 Update 1

Highly secure

R3Access does 3 levels of authorization and authentication before it provides access to e-resources. These levels are described below

1. Users will be provided a R3Access CD through which they can access e-resources. CD once activated from a computer cannot be used from another computer.

2. R3Access registers the user computer's IP-address. Henceforth system accepts the connections only from that IP-address. However in many cases users access from dial-up connections (dynamic IP-addresses) in such cases organization can customize system to work with dial-ups.

3. User id and password based authentication: In many organizations users usually have user ids and passwords using which they access the campus management software or library management software. In such cases this data is migrated into R3Access. Organizations that do not have any such data can also create a realm of user ids and passwords

4. R3Access strictly disallows users trying to access the e-resources through proxy servers thus reducing the mis-utilization of the system

5. R3Access allows the users to view only authorized sites. Any other sites are not allowed to be accessed through the R3Access.

Scalable and efficient

R3Access is highly scalable and efficient. However its efficiency is directly related to the hardware resources and inbound & outbound Internet connectivity speed. In case of high loads on the R3Access server, multiple R3Access servers can be installed and load balancing can be done. R3Access also caches static content on the server so that users are sent the cached content hence improving the efficient usage of bandwidth

Uses open source technologies

R3Access has no hidden costs involved. All the third party technologies used are either free or open source available under GNU/GPL license. These technologies are Linux (Redhat, Fedora, Debian or ) operating system, J2SDK 1.6, squid web cache, SWING, postgresql database server and Tomcat J2EE web server.
